“In today’s day and age, many people think you get peace by resolving all your external problems, but there are unlimited external problems. The only way to actually get peace on the inside is by giving up the idea of having problems.”
“Humans are always signaling. Rather than really looking at yourself, you’re looking at how other people look at you”
“It’s kind of a disease – social media is making celebrities of all of us and celebrities are the most miserable people in the world”
“I don’t care how rich you are. I don’t care whether you’re a top Wall Street banker, if somebody has to tell you when to be at work, what to wear and how to behave, you’re not a free person. You’re not actually rich.”
“The more you judge people and things, the more you’re going to separate yourself. You’ll feel good for an instant… but then you’re gonna feel lonely and then you’re just going to see negativity everywhere. The world just reflects your own feelings back at you.”
“A clear mind leads to better judgment and better outcomes. A happy, calm, and peaceful person will make better decisions. So if you want to operate at peak performance, you have to learn how to tame your mind”
“The peace that we seek is not peace of mind, it’s peace from mind”
“If you look at all the crazy activities you do to be happy. whether it’s trying to get laid and have an orgasm or extreme sports or looking at something beautiful or taking a psychedelic, you’re just trying to get out of your own mind. You’re trying to get your monkey mind to stop chattering. You’re trying to get peace from the mind, but there are other better ways to do that… Whereas if you understand things, if you see things properly, you will naturally, slowly develop peace from mind.”
“Play long term games with long term people.”
“We live in an age of infinite leverage, and because of that, the impacts of good decision-making are much higher than they used to be”
In today’s world, your actions can be multiplied a thousand fold – either by broadcasting a podcast, having people work for you, or writing code. You can influence thousands or millions of people through your decisions
“The normal range of psychological suffering, not clinical depression, but just feeling like life sucks and you’re a failure… that is a story of telling yourself a story. It all has to do with your thinking. You can become more mindful and interrupt it more and more and start to reframe things by telling yourself a better story.”
Simple hack. If you’re stuck in traffic driving to the job you don’t like, just think of all the bad things that could have happened to you that haven’t. If any one of those happened, think about how much you’d be wishing to get back that moment of driving to work.
“The half-life of negative emotions is incredibly short”; If you’re not continually thinking about all the reasons you should be anxious (or angry, etc.), the emotion dissipates very quickly
“Mindfulness is just learning to pay close attention to the nature of your experience… You’re not adding anything to your experience, you’re just noticing what it’s like to be you moment to moment, but in a way that’s not reactive. You’re not grasping at what’s pleasant or pushing what’s unpleasant away.”
“To a greater or lesser degree, we’re always at war. We’re always fighting something. We’re either noticing something wrong, feeling uncomfortable in our body, reacting to something that somebody did, navigating a social encounter that seems awkward, or trying to figure out what to say… We’re just constantly being blown around. The moments where you really feel good…. entail the dropping of this sense of self.”
“When we’re really just connecting with life in a joyful, creative, and beautiful way… when you look out the window and it’s the most beautiful sunset ever and you are just looking at the sunset and you’re fully connected with its beauty, those are the kinds of moments when you lose this sense of self.”
